New way to post fishing destination postings. Answers lots of questions about gear and travel info.

The Location: Louisiana with Captain Greg Dini

The Food: Do Visit Drago's for dinner excellent fare. Grilled Oysters appetizer is their signature dish.

Do not go to Mulates New Orleans : The zydeco music was good but the food was crazy salty. I think this place was good once, but for whatever reason it has lost it's ways.

The Accommodations: We stayed at the Renaissance Pere Marquette Hotel New Orleans. Beautiful 4 star hotel. I got at deal on it using priceline and paid only $61 a night! It's 3 blocks away from he French quarters and Bourbon street. I wouldn't stay there if I had to pay full price but for $61 for a 4 star hotel was an awesome deal!

Interesting places we visited: Aquarium of the Americas , Very cool aquarium. Good place to kill some time when the weather isn't so great for fishing.

The Boat: Inshore Power Boats

Fishing Gear: Loop Fly Gear for the reels we used the 9wt and the 10wt when it was windy. G.loomis Rods Cross Current GLX for the 9wt and Pro1 for the 10wt.

Apparel: Simms Fly Fishing, very durable and functional fishing apparel. I used it up in Alaska and it works great in L.A.

Camera Gears Used in this production: Nikon D300s DSLR and Canon Xh-a1s

Finished up the Louisiana Redfish HD video with Captain Greg Dini

11.28.2009

By Sam Root of Saltyshores.com

Today I poled the flats for some red fish, near the house for a couple hours. The hope was to get a couple fish on fly this morning. We spooked a few fish that was like 10-15ft away but for the most part it was slim pickings. I did get  like a 5 inch trout to technically avoid the complete skunk.

Yesterday I finally finished the Louisiana redfish video with Captain Greg Dini.

Look for more high quality video like this one. I'm looking to shoot kayak fishing, some bay boat stuff as well as offshore. I'm looking to mix in Flyfishing and lots of sight fishing stuff. To me showing the eat is the key. I hate watching TV shows showing people already hooked up to a fish. You miss the initial excitement of the eat and the most hectic part.

Here is the HD version

11.27.2009 Marsh Works lures and snook fishing on Thanksgiving day

11.27.2009

By Sam Root of Saltyshores.com

I did not expect many to be at the ramp since it was Thanksgving and all but surprisingly there were plenty of people fishing. Not like a weekend but we were definitely not the only the sole out there.

With the hard westerly winds yesterday the water was high. I didn't bring a spinning rod as I wanted to practice my fly fishing. Edwin poled me around some but the water was too high and murky most of the time. I had 1 shot on the fly and the snook did not eat. I poled him around the deeper areas as he blind casted jigs. He got two snooks to the boat but overall it was kind of slow. We saw only 2 red and most snooks were cruising around.

Today "black friday" I was suppose to fish Grouper on fly but the wind directions just was not cooperating today. It was canceled to reshoot another day.

I stayed at home and catch up on things. One of the project that is pending is a product shoot for Marsh works lures. They make spinner baits, corks with spinners, soft plastics and jig heads. To  me, the most impressive thing they have is the jig heads. It has a semi weedless shallow head. Lifelike eyes and the hook looks to be pretty sturdy looking. Lots of useful colors as well as my favorite yellow chartreuse.

I will be doing some lifestyle type shots with the lures on the water. Here are a few I shot of the jig heads today using a macro lens. I used some water to give it a little feel.

4in1 Lure with Fishbuzz

11.18.2009

By Sam Root of Saltyshores.com

Today even though it was slick calm out there I had an obligation to shoot some video footage and stills with FishbuzzTV. They were shooting a infomercial stuff for the 4in1 Lure. It's a fishing plug with interchangeable lips. This allows a person to fish 1-2 foot of water and just by changing the lip of the lure fish up to 10' of water.

Interesting concept none the less.

These product shots were taken with the 35mm 1.8 (very cheap lens but looks pretty darn good)

Breath Like a Fish Video Completed.

11.17.2009

By Sam Root of Saltyshores.com

Today was slick calm on the water here in Tampa. I wanted to be out there but figured I better catch up on things again.

Had lunch with C.A. Richardson of Flatsclass TV over in Brandon. We had a really productive talk about the state of the industry. How the way we market things are quickly changing. Saltyshores hope to be there when they do.

I also finished the video for www.breathelikeafish.com

The video was done using 2 cameras. A regular video camera and a Nikon D300s. You can tell which was the DSLR as it has the really cool shallow depth of field.

Tampa Fly fishing then Everglades fishing with Sebile Plugs

Saturday I fished with Tom of WangAnchor. We decided to go strictly fly. I brought along my Gloomis Glx 9wt and used the Loop 8wt reel with a 9wt line in it.

We saw lots of fish and I had 2 eats. One was an upper slot red  fish that tracked and ate the fly right in front of me. The other is was a line class record creek chub. Yes he actually ate it.

I also had a chance to cast Tom's 8wt Crowder fly rod. I gotta say, for a mid range rod with a life time warranty I was pretty impressed. It was very light, moderately fast, and had great components.

Sunday I was up at 5am to make a trip down to the Everglades with Jay Withers. Since he has never been down there I was the guide today. I've only been down there a couple times and really not an expert.

About 1/2 hour into the our run we realized we both did not bring and cutters or pliers. Anxious to fish we decided to improvised. We took the middle hook out of a lure and used it as a dehooker. Jay used his teeth to cut the line. Yes he probably took a couple years of enamel off his pearly whites. All I had on the boat was an adjustable wrench and we used that as our pliers. Since it was such a pain to change lures I used the Sebile Stick shad the entire day.

The 5 hours of the day was very tough. Not fishing there in quite a long time I had no idea where the fish would be staging. Fishing out front was out of the question as all the wind had the water dirty and mucky. We struggled to find any fish at all. In the 1st 5 hours all we yielded was 2 jacks and snook.

2pm we finally found them. Lots of snook and plenty of over the slot laid up floating momma snooks. We got 16 snook on the stick shad in 2 hours and had some great shots at the big girls. However every time we would make the cast the smaller more aggressive fish would get to the lure first.

By 4pm we had to make the long run back to the ramp. It was an excellent day considering the conditions of the high waters and pressure. Also the fact that it was my 1st trip there since spring. I will be back soon when it gets a bit colder so the snook will be moved back to cleaner and skinnier waters.

40lb Black Drum in Louisianna with Captain Greg Dini Nov 12th 2009

November 13th 2009November 13th 2009

By Sam Root of Saltyshores.com
got back from Louisianan late last night. I have been fishing the Louisiana with Capt. Greg Dinni and the Derek of Boldwater. We flew into town Monday night about 8pm, yep right when Ida was making land fall. Unbelievably Soutwest airlines did not cancel the flight. We ran right behind the hurricane.

The flight was a little rough on the approach but other than that it was  not to bad at all. I did a priceline offer and got a us a cheap hotel near downtown New Orleans. I offered $61 dollars for a 4 star hotel. I guess it was off season because to my surprise my bid was accepted right away at the Pere Marquette. It was a couple blocks away from the Bourbon street the party headquarters. The rooms was small but otherwise very very nice.

The next day we planned on fishing but since it was gusting 35mph and the water being murky we opted to stay in town and do the tourist stuff. We did the Aquarium tours and of course of Bourbon street.

The food:

The Po boy's at Penny's were always good and consistent not to mention the  breakfast.

Dragos in downtown was just like last time, phenomenal seafood. We took Greg there for dinner and at some softshell crabs topped with some crab stuffing. The Oysters topped with cheese and garlic was legendary. From ambiance to food and service 5 stars absolutely.

We also ate on the 2nd night at place called Mulates nearby. The place came highly recommended and Greg had heard good things about it. From the moment we pulled up I can tell it didn't seem right. I mean the place looked nice and all but all the clientele were older patrons and the place wasn't even close to being busy.

Going against our instinct we wanted to eat there. We had the sampler plate along with gumbo. Derek ordered a cajun burger, Greg had the fish. I have to say at first I thought it was just one dish that was overly salty but to my dismay every single dish was doused in salt! I started to ask the guys, isn't the food too salty? They absolutely agree that everyone was at the point that it was not edible. This has to be one of worst places I've eaten in quite a long time. The service was avaerage, the ambiance was good the food was 1 star. Please avoid this place if you are looking for good food. On a good note, the music was good if you like zydeco music. Smiley

The 1st day we did great considering it was a day right after the hurricane. I even got one on the fly while Derek was fighting his fish!

The 2nd day we only had 1/2 of a day since we had to hit road by 3pm to make it ot the airport in time. Greg still put on some nice fish. We caught a few fish on the spin using the DOA Cal Gold Rush. Then we decided to use my Loop 9wt for the rest of the day. This was a great choice. Derek and I switched off and we ended up catching some nice reds up to 13lbs. We caped the day off when Greg got a nice 40lb Black Drum on the fly.

Originally the plan was to target monster reds in the 20-40lb class range on fly but the storm forced us to fish clear skinny water due to lack of visibility. I will be back soon as the season for monster reds on fly is just starting over there.
